This talk is the second of four in a Climate Change series co-sponsored by: Professor Anant Sundaram’s Business and Climate Change Course; the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society; and the Revers Center for Energy.
On April 17, 2017, Ms. McLeod will discuss the links between climate and adaptation strategies, with a focus on assessing climate risks and on developing market solutions to build resilience. Kathy Baughman McLeod is Managing Director, Climate Risk and Resilience at The Nature Conservancy (TNC). She leads a team that addresses the challenges and opportunities of climate adaptation with a focus on engagement with insurance, engineering, and investment sectors to develop financial solutions to protect and advance natural infrastructure such as reefs, oysters, marshes and mangroves. TNC uses insurance industry-based tools to quantify benefits of enhanced natural assets, such as protection of coastal wetlands and their provision of storm and flood risk reduction to people and property.

This talk is the first of four in a Climate Change series co-sponsored by: Professor Anant Sundaram’s Business and Climate Change Course; the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society; and the Revers Center for Energy.
On March 27, 2017, Mr. David Hone will discuss the outlook for the global energy system and its constituent businesses, in the context of the Paris Climate Agreement. David Hone has worked in the oil and gas industry since 1980 in various roles, including refinery engineer, supply economist and oil trader. Today he is the Chief Climate Change Adviser for Royal Dutch Shell. He’ll share his insights in this first event in the 2016-2017 Climate Change Speaker Series. Mr. Hone will provide an overview of the impacts of the Paris Agreement on the oil and gas industry, and discuss how the energy system might evolve over the coming decades.

The Columbia Energy Symposium brings together more than 300 energy professionals, students, faculty, leaders, and executives representing industry, government, and society, to explore and advance our insights into today’s challenging energy questions. On January 20, 2017, Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. Dartmouth, Tuck, and Thayer are hosting a week of topical panels during inauguration week to discuss opportunities and risks under the new Administration. On Friday, January 20, 2017, Energy and Environment Issues will be discussed.
Dean Joe Helble, Thayer School of Engineering, will moderate a faculty panel discussion covering topics ranging from the future of renewables, fossil fuels and nuclear; climate and environmental policy and regulation; the role of government; and how we might anticipate industry changes over the next four years. Refreshments will be provided.

If you could know the truth about the threat of climate change — would you want to know? Before the Flood, presented by National Geographic, features Leonardo DiCaprio on a journey as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, traveling to five continents and the Arctic to witness climate change firsthand. He goes on expeditions with scientists uncovering the reality of climate change and meets with political leaders fighting against inaction. He also discovers a calculated disinformation campaign orchestrated by powerful special interests working to confuse the public about the urgency of the growing climate crisis. With unprecedented access to thought leaders around the world, DiCaprio searches for hope in a rising tide of catastrophic news.
Following the film there will be a panel discussion with Professor Erich Osterberg, earth sciences; Anne Kapuscinski, environmental studies; Lauren Culler, environmental studies and the Institute of Arctic Studies at the Dickey Center; and Victor Cabrera '19.
Co-sponsored by the Institute of Arctic Studies at the Dickey Center for International Understanding and the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Free and open to the public.
